“Life isn’t boring”, is arguably the most diplomatic euphemism I can muster for what’s going on in the world right now. From wildfires in real life, to wild liars online; things feel distinctly out of control.
As ever, we endeavour to keep putting one foot in front of another, and to keep delivering educational and entertaining content, in the form of 4 YouTube episodes a week, and 5 exhibitions a year (next up blockbusters in Sydney and London).
As I’ve said many times before, it’s been the privilege of my 30 year career to lead (the) Fully Charged (Show Ltd), but it’s not been without its complications and challenges.
Chief amongst them is how can you build a business on the shifting sands of the ‘new’ energy and transportation sectors?
Especially, as these technologies are at the mercy of global geopolitics, which in turn have been shaken by black swan events such as COVID and major conflicts, as well as a disconcerting rightwards lurch in politics (which has IMHO been hugely exacerbated by growing inequality).
Very sadly many of the businesses that we cover on our YouTube channels (or that exhibit at our events) are embryonic in nature, and as such we have seen far, far too many go out of business in the last few years.
While we expect some increased policy stability around EVs and clean energy in the UK from 2025 to 2029, countries where we operate like the US, Canada and possibly Australia could see sizable political change in the coming months.
In our recent experience, ‘elections and electrons rarely mix.’
With our reliance on revenues from exhibitions in particular, we are working to develop new recurring revenue streams, and you will see some changes in the near future; including a significant change this week*.
Bear in mind that whenever we make any changes of this nature, we do so with as much sensitivity as is humanly possible, and to ensure that our editorial integrity remains sacrosanct.
Despite our (almost) 15 years in operation, we remain a small business simply striving to spread the word about electrification and its many benefits to the widest possible audience.
*To this end, this week for the first time, both episodes of the Fully Charged SHOW* and the Everything Electric SHOW** will have an in-episode sponsor for the next 6 months, and we are delighted to welcome Duracell Energy in that capacity, read more here.
Almost every other YouTuber in our space accepts sponsorship, but until now we have chosen not to. When we reluctantly made the decision to do so, we were absolutely clear that if we did, we must do it in a way that didn’t detract from your viewing pleasure.
The proof will be in the pudding of course, but it’s our belief that the sponsorship treatment that we have worked on with Duracell Energy, neither detracts nor distracts, and in fact offers lucky viewers the chance to win a cuddly bunny. simply by answering a question at the end of the episode.
Commercial activities like this, like the sponsoring of our newsletters, and selling merch as a few examples, in addition to those that come from your kind Patreon contributions, and buying tickets to our Everything Electric expos, are helping to secure the future of Fully Charged in uncertain times.
The irony is that the advertising revenue we receive from the tens of millions of annual views we receive on YouTube (Google) represents ~2% of our annual revenue and enables us to keep the cameras rolling, but not much more.
The size of platforms like YouTube (including Meta / Facebook / Instagram / Threads, as well as X, formerly twitter) and the enormous influence that they exert is worrying at the best of times.
In the worst of times, the potential for truth and data to be undermined, or most terrifying of all, to disrupt democracies, is extremely disturbing. It is increasingly easy to feel powerless.
When it comes to misinformation on the technologies that we specialise on, our new initiative Electric Vehicles UK is working with the EV Industry and with EV Drivers to tackle misinformation in the first instance, and ultimately to restore some control to the narrative.
We would like to offer our thanks to those that support the Stop Burning Stuff Patreon and that have enabled us to take on this Herculean challenge in the UK and hopefully in the not too distant future, around the world.
As you can hopefully see from all the above, we are doing everything in our power to make the world a better (and more breathable) place.
Whether it’s through watching episodes, visiting our exhibitions, buying merchandise, or by contributing to our Patreon pages (Fully Charged SHOW or Stop Burning Stuff), we are genuinely grateful for your support.
With sincere thanks from our whole team, including Robert who’s currently filming in New Zealand and Australia, ahead of our biggest exhibition ever: Everything Electric Sydney.
**Look out for two great new episodes this week – see thumbnails above and below – and get 2025 off to a ‘fully charged’ start!
